The Band (2009) Un-Cut Version

This blog post is about The Band (2009) Un-Cut Version, which has now been set free to be viewed in its full glory. Oftentimes the movie-making process is a delicate balancing act. A director must walk the tightrope of making commercial work for their studio, whilst also remaining faithful to the art that attracted them to film-making in the first place. If they veer too far off course it can lead to disaster because Hollywood production companies are not known for being patient or understanding with artists who refuse to play by their rules. It is the nature of the movie-making business that when a movie is done there are often scenes which are shot but eventually left on the cutting room floor. These are due to various reasons, including length of film or lack of narrative space in the final edit. Some movies have an abundance of unused material, whilst others have just one or two scenes that were never used in the final product. The Band is a 2009 film starring John Goodman, John Hawkes and Tim McGraw in his acting debut. The movie was produced by Simon Kinberg, who has since gone on to work on the Fantastic Four movies, X-Men movies and Logan. The movie is based off the American Band book series written by Dennis Lehane. The 2008 book series tells the story of a small town in North Carolina, where three men are trying to overcome their pasts to become successful musicians. The guys are Bobby Neutron (John Hawkes), Doc Bundy (John Goodman) and Slim Goodbody (Tim McGraw). The story also covers their blossoming romance over several months as they push past all their fears, demons and egos to finally become Rock Stars. The movie was directed by George Tillman Jr., who has worked on movies such as Soul Food, Men of Honor and Notorious. Getting a movie made is difficult, even though the scripts for these movies are usually one of the first elements to be put into production. Once a company signs on to make a movie they have to start immediately with the casting process because it takes so long for them to get their actors locked down. Once all the actors are locked down everything else has to move fast-forward too because generally every single aspect of every stand-alone scene in any film has to be approved by at least 30 people before it can be filmed. The Band had a huge amount of material cut from the final edit which made it difficult for the studio to release the movie on time. Producer Simon Kinberg gave an interview where he stated: "It's a matter of getting it done and we wanted to get it done in five years, and we got it done in four-and-a-half." The movie was released on DVD and Blu Ray on 5th April 2010, and is available to purchase online through Amazon.com and other retailers. Currently there is no word if this version will be released on Blu Ray again.
